Joao del Castilho: Vault of the sacristy in the convent of the Jerónimos, Belem. Lisboa_03 Print E-mail

[....] The formeret arches’ keys remain at a level clearly lower than the central key’s height, so they should be drawn with different arches from the previous ones; nevertheless, in the ovals the upper arch can tilt forward while maintaining the lower circle, as it can be seen in photo 12. This geometrical tool would allow to attain the key of the formeret arches with the same arch; as a conclusion, the whole vault could be built with just one arch, that is, the upper part of the diagonal’s oval. The mass of the tas-de-charges, which does not really belong in the vaulting area, is formed with the lower part of the oval (photo 13).

Under these criteria, can the building of the vault start off. First, the design of the full scale drawing is undertaken (photo 14, 15 and 16), as well in plan as in elevation, shown in photo 17 and 18. Once the arches are drawn, with the curvature of the oval arch’s upper part can be built the baibel (photo 19), with which to undertake the voussoirs’ carving (photo 20, 21). Let us recall that all the voussoirs, owing to standardization, are equal. Photo 22 shows the whole curvature of the main arch, that is, the upper part of the oval.

It is relatively easy to carve the subsidiary ribs, since the quadrefoil’s drawing is at a horizontal plan, so its horizontal projection defines quite precisely these ribs’ shape. Starting from this position, are carved some horizontal curved ribs which, later on, will be finished with their section distorted (photo 23 y 24) [....]
